Sonia Gandhi after appearing on the Forbes List of most powerful women in the world has reached another milestone - she was given an honorary doctorate by the Madras University.
The Congress President looked visibly overwhelmed and emotional upon receiving the honor from S S Barnala, the Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor of the Madras University.
In a packed auditorium she said in her acceptance speech, “This morning is an occasion which I will cherish and approach with great humility. In all humility, I must say I hardly deserve the honour bestowed upon me,”
Sonia Gandhi earned this honor for her “committment to the ideals of democracy and secularism, advocacy of ethics and accountability and for her pragmatic stand between democratic institutionalism and political choices.”
Apart from Gandhi, PM MAnmohan Singh and CM Karunanidhi also were conferred honorary doctorates for 'staunch belief in ideals that will make India a global force' and for 'contributing to Tamil language, literature, culture' respectively.
