Another nightmarish incident due to mismanagement in hospitals. An eight year old kid in Hyderabad died due wrong diagnosis.
The kid was brought to a city hospital with acute respiratory distress and she was accidentally diagnosed as HIV-infected. She died on Wednesday.
When her parents were tested for HIV, the tests turned out to be negative. The child, Pratyusha had received blood transfusion two weeks earlier in Warangal and questions were raised if the blood used in transfusion was HIV free. But since the window period for the HIV virus to show up is at least four weeks, it was just not possible that Pratyusha contracted HIV during that transfusion. Moreover, the blood donors were also tested and they turned out to be HIV negative.
In an interesting twist, it was revealed that her CD4 and lymphocyte count were low...which means she had carried the virus for some time. Also, the Andhra Pradesh AIDS control authority had canceled the license of this bank two years ago.
Both the blood banks have been sealed and the police have registered a case of attempt to murder. The answer to HOW the kid contracted the virus is under investigation.
